Why does the air condition make my room smell like cat poo?

I have one of those window air conditioners and whenever I turn it on my room ends up smelling like a litter box. I know the cats dont use the bathroom on it, the cat litter box is in the room next to mine, but it is down in the basement while my room is upstairs, could the cooler somehow be pulling the smell up here? What the heck? What can I do?

Have you tried cleaning the filter or putting a new one in?

If you have a boy cat he may have sprayed it. Some keep spraying even after they are neutered.
