When should I turn on my air conditioning for my cats?
Confused asked:
Does anyone know what temperature I should turn on my air conditioning for my cats? I am afraid that if it gets too warm they will over heat, but I don’t know what is “too warm”.

You can turn it on at 80 degrees or so. Your kitties might be a little warm but they won’t be in danger at that temperature. You can leave a fan running for them and they should be comfortable and your electric bill won’t be sky high.

I have three cats at home and I keep the AC at 76 degrees when I go to work but 78-80 would be OK. Cats are more tolerant of the heat than dogs plus they spend most of the day sleeping anyway. Make sure they have fresh, clean water before you go to work. That’s the most important thing.

I think that whatever temperature you put it on at to keep the home comfortable for yourself is fine for your cats unless they have a medical condidion that may be causing breathing problems.
We have about 9 cats on our property that are outdoor cats and tolerate the weather fine. This past week was 90 and humid without a breeze. They just lay around and stretch out and sleep.
As somone noted previously, provide them with plenty of water and they will be fine.

Don’t worry, all house cats are genetically descended from African Wild cats (felis libyca) they are heat seekers by design. If its cool enough for you, they are fine. Turn on the AC when its too warm for you, and they will be fine and probably be looking for a hot patch of sunlight. In extreme climates don’t let the room temp go over 85 and never leave a cat in an un air conditioned car unattended.
That being said, ALWAYS keep easy access to a cool water supply for your cats and on extra hot days leave out a bowl of ice cubes to melt slowly.

When do you turn it on for yourself?
Make sure your cats have plenty of clean water (they LOVE it if you drop a couple ice cubes in it, it keeps it fresh) and they’ll be fine in most temperatures.
Don’t let your home get above 85 for any extended period of time, though — it won’t kill them (though much hotter might) but it wouldn’t be very comfortable for them or you.

It depends on your cats. Three of mine will find the hottest place in the house to go and often lay in the sun, even when it’s already in the 80′s and 90′s. A fan may be all that is required as the cats can take way more heat then you can. Just be sure to always have water available. The exception would be if they are confined to one room where they can’t move to a cooler room when they need to. Then you should have an A/C or a fan at the very least.
Never leave any animal (or child) in a car as they are more like an oven and can reach well over 100 in a short amount of time.
My other cat will sleep in the screen porch in the winter and in front of the fan in the summer so he is the exception. He’s an Arctic Cat I guess!
