What is wrong with the air conditioning in my 1996 Cadillac Eldorado?

Kitty asked:

I have a 1996 Cadillac Eldorado, and it looks like the outside casing on the air conditioning is breaking off in pieces. It’s like the plastic dried out. Now I think one of the broken pieces fell onto the intake manifold and started to melt, causing an awful burning smell. What can I do to fix the problem?
Is there a specific name for the casing so I can order another one?

The need to replace the entire compressor not just the casing.
