What is the cost to have freon discharged and then disposed of from an air condition home central unit?

Steve W asked:

I was told I had a leaky valve (freon) when my unit stopped putting out cold air. valve replaced freon put in and after 20 minutes it stopped blowing cold again. This time i was told i need new compressor , discharging, disposal of freon . does this sound feasible. I was told 296.00 for discharge 140.00 for disposal. Does this sound reasonable?

    Yes. A little high.

They should be able to collect your freon and put it back into your system when they replace the compressor. They will charge something for the pulling the freon from the system, but $296 sounds excessive. I would guess more like $150. There shouldn’t be any disposal costs.
Do you trust these guys? Might want to get a second cost for this work. Ask your neighbors who they’ve used for HVAC repairs and if they were happy.

Please do yourself a favor and check around with other vendors.
When they take your freon, they will just put it into some other unit, or just put it back in to yours and bill you for your own freon that they just took out of your unit
