Help! Air conditioning question. Which Trane AC system is best for me?
I asked several contractors to come out and estimate the cost of installing a/c in my home. The two finalists both use Trane a/cs. The cheaper one suggested a 3.5 ton unit, the XB13. The other costs $500 more and suggested a 4 ton unit, the XR13. I have a 2 story house in California with 1800 square feet. I will probably use it for 6 hours a day, May-September. Is the XR-13 worth the extra money in terms of higher efficiency, better durability, quieter operation, etc, etc?
ask the contractors to show you the load calculations. they probably believe they can guess close enough. a system will be most efficient when it is sized properly to begin with. it has been my experience that very few actually take the time to do it right. as far as comparing units, the truth is the differences are minimal. the sound diff. is only 2 decibles, you won’t notice it. and one is 13 seer and the other is 13.5 seer. not a huge difference. the big difference is the warranty on the compressor. you can go to the website www.trane.com click on residential and check under products. they have a wealth of info.
