If your sight glass is clear or black, there is no problem. When your sight glass is a cloudy white color, it is an indication that there is moisture in the system and that the desiccant that absorbs the moisture is bad. The desiccant bag is located inside the receiver drier or accumulator.

Unfortunately, there is no dip stick or meter to check the amount of oil in the ac compressor. The refrigerant oil mixes with the refrigerant and is evenly distributed throughout the system, some in the ac compressor, drier, condenser, evaporator, etc.

When you perform a recharge or a repair, you should estimate how much oil was lost. Typically you loose 2 ounces of oil when you drain the refrigerant or if it leaks out. Then if you replace a component, such as the ac compressor or condenser, there was oil in the component that you removed but not any oil in the new component. So figure another 1-2 ounces of oil per component.

If you are concerned that you have too much oil, the only way to fix this is to flush the entire system with an ac solvent. Once all the oil is out, you put in the factory recommended amount back in (usually 6 to 8 ounces).
