Alena

set your thermostat to cool, this is done by flipping the swtch to the cool position, or advancing to the cool setting through a button labeled mode on a newer digital tstat

Maxima

if its a standard thermostat, just put it on cool and auto. slide the lever to the temp you want. if its a programable one. all of them have instructions on the lid that opens. if you don't have any program guide as they are differant on each model. you should have a button on it that says cool, heat and emergecy heat. put it on cool. then on the temp button, push and hold until it flashes and then push the up or down mode to the temp you want. it will cycle on override.

Beulah

You need a manual to simply turn on and off your central air?

Cool setting is for COOL
HEAT setting is for HEAT

put the switch in the position you want it and at the temp you want it

Tennie

It will be worth it for you to call your local heating and cooling repairman and tell him nothing is wrong with it but that you want him to come out to your house and just give you a general verbal explanation of how it works and how to "troubleshoot" it.
