Does not using your car air condition really improve gas mileage?

I’ve always heard it does. “Turn off your air conditioner to save gas.”

True or not?

There is energy expended to turn the airconditioner’s compressor, but how much? Not enough to keep me from using it. If your car use is pretty regular (basically same trips to work and store each week) you can keep track of the mileage one week with A/C versus the next week without A/C. I’ll guess there wouldn’t be 2 miles to the gallon difference.

Turning it off increases your engine power but, not your gas mileage. A proper maintaince like regular oil changes, tune-up, change air filter and gas filter, proper pressure on the tires will improve your gas mileage, and avoid unnecessary fast take-off, it will suck up a lot of gas too.So enjoy turning your air condition anytime you want it…………………………… What the heck ! Just open your window. It will prevent global warming.

i saw a episode on mythbusters where they had two identical vechiles with same amount of gasoline and drove the same speed limit one with air conditioning on and one with it off and the windows down around a racetrack until they both ran out of gas. The one with the windows down ran quite a bit farther so yes rolling down the windows helps. Plus most air conditioners take at least 10 horse power to run so.

because you are not running the compressor, and eliminating that load against the engine, you will indeed improve your fuel economy.

I don’t use my a/c much cause it does use more gas. But you should turn it on at least once a month (even in winter) just to keep the a/c parts properly lubricated.

yes it is air conditioner cost a lot of gas. because car not using electric . car is using the gas to produce air conditioner.if you use heater no worry of gas because it comes from the heat of your machine.
