Experience with heat and creatures in Phoenix, AZ?
Hi everyone. My husband and I are considering moving to Phoenix. The warm weather and housing prices are looking great to us here in New England. However, I see that July – September is REALLY hot, like 100 degrees +. How do you folks down in Phoenix typically deal with that? Does EVERYONE have an air conditioned house? Generally stay inside during the day?
Also, being from a place that doesn’t really have any poisonous creatures to worry about, I am concerned about the stories of scorpions/spiders/snakes I’ve heard. Have you found any of those to be a real problem? I know I’d have to be careful if going hiking…but just around the house/neighborhood? The horror stories of getting stung while sleeping in bed are freaking me out!

Yes, everyone does have AC in their homes, cars, schools and businesses. You really can’t exist without it. An alternative is to spend the whole summer in a swimming pool. In reality, if you consume a lot of water you can do things like walk, jog, play golf etc. in the middle of summer. You will find a way to adapt to the heat.
Where do so many untrue stories about scorpions/spiders/snakes come from? I think they come from people who really don’t live here. From people on Yahoo answers that just are bored and want to type in old wifetales based on stereotypes and legends.
There are scorpions. I’ve seen one live one in four years. I’ve killed two black widow spiders, which you have in New England as well. I heard a few rattlesnakes in a gulch near a golf coourse one time.
Scorpions like to live in areas or habitats that don’t get a lot of activity. You seldom find them in metropolitan areas where there is a lot of vehicle vibration in the ground. They burrow into the earth during the cooler months and sort of hibernate. You may see them at night when the nightime low temperatures are above 100 degrees. They like the darkness and the extreme heat.
Many people hire an exterminator to spray around their houses as the warm weather approaches. That’s not a bad idea if you have pets and small children. Also remember that crickets are a scorpions favorite food and that crickets eat everything including other crickets. So keep your house clean. Don’t eat in the bedrooms and drop food on the floor or the crickets will find your food and the scorpions may try to find the crickets. It’s a food chain thing.
Don’t be scared off by rumors and false stories. I was born in NYC and I much prefer Arizona to New England. One reason is that Arizona is much newer and cleaner.
